Material Memory
Why the objects we choose to live with are a form of autobiography.
Every material carries a history before it enters the room — and a future it is already moving towards. Oak remembers the direction of its grain. Bronze remembers every hand that has touched it. Linen carries the light differently at the end of a decade than it did at the beginning.
We do not choose materials for what they look like on delivery. We choose them for what they become.
This is the philosophy that informs every piece in the ISLOFT Lifestyle collection. We do not choose materials for what they look like on delivery. We choose them for what they become — and we select craftspeople who understand this distinction instinctively, because they have spent decades working with materials that age.
The Breton stonemason
For the Matière II collection, we worked with a stonemason in Finistère whose workshop has operated on the same site since 1891. His family has quarried and worked the local granite for five generations. He describes the stone as having a character — not a quality, a character. It responds differently to different tools. It holds warmth in one season and releases it in another. He does not rush it.
